With around 1,300 employees, the Bundesamt für Justiz (BfJ) (Federal Office of Justice) is a top-level federal agency within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Justice (BMJ).

As the central service provider for the judiciary, the BfJ performs a wide range of tasks. It serves as the contact and liaison office of the Federal Republic of Germany for European and international legal affairs.

As a registry authority, the BfJ is responsible for the Federal Central Criminal Register, the Central Public Prosecutor’s Proceedings Register, the Central Trade Register, and for managing the exchange of criminal records with foreign countries.

In addition, within the framework of consumer protection, the BfJ also acts as the official conciliation body for air transport.
